Getting in the Weeds

Screen Shot 2015-08-03 at 5.06.50 PMThis has been a particularly rainy summer and as a result, the weeds have gone wild in my yard. Usually the heat will burn them out at one point or another but not so this summer. I’ve been fighting the battle of the weeds and I’m not sure if I am winning! This past weekend with lopers in hand I went to town in our backyard. It’s one of my least favorite things to do. I always contemplate – should I just pay someone to do this? Is it worth it?

Then I finish, and the end result IS worth it. The transformation IS worth the sweat and labor. Each year I tell myself if I just keep up – it won’t be nearly so miserable. If I just trim as they pop up, it will be much more manageable and less miserable! It makes sense. But then life gets in the way …

Isn’t that similar to weight loss and/or a fitness routine? We have good intentions. If we keep up and keep to it, it’s much more manageable than waiting until things get out of hand and starting over. It’s miserable starting over. Life gets in the way. We take a week off. Then a month. And then we look in the mirror and don’t like what we see. Or we try to do activities we like and don’t like how we feel. We don’t sleep well. We don’t like how our clothes look and feel. Whatever the reason, we realize we are in the weeds when it comes to our healthy lifestyle.

Once again, I am going to try to keep up with the yard.  I’m going to nip weeds in the bud and not wait until they become bushes!  I’m going to take the hard work of this weekend as motivation to not have to do that again! Maybe that’s what we need is to remember how miserable starting over is to keep us on track and keep us out of the weeds!
