The Unexpected Compliment

Eat Right, Exercise, Be Kind and You'll be Happy & Healthy!
Achieve and Acknowledge Achievement!

Yesterday, I received an unexpected message from a friend of mine. I’ve known her for almost ten years but now we live in different states and don’t chat as often. Both our lives are busy and I’m not sure if we even did Christmas cards this year!

Sometimes that happens. Even with the best of intentions and no bad feelings, we lose touch a bit from people who have played an important role at some point in our lives. Because of this I was surprised to hear from her yesterday. And even more surprised with what she had to say:

I am so proud of what you have accomplished on your own these past several years. I always knew you had that entrepreneur mind set and super happy to see where you have taken your business! You are a rockstar!! I always loved your spinning classes and my one attempt at you teaching me on the reformer! You have realized your dream!!! Love ya!

Wow!  To say that made my day would be an understatement! I haven’t talked to her about my business in at least 6 months and yet she’s followed my progress on Facebook and took the time to acknowledge it.  I was really touched.

Of course, that got me thinking… have I told the people I care about how proud I am of them?  Knowing the impact a simple compliment can have – maybe I should make that more of a priority.  We won’t call it a New Year’s Resolution but the New Year does seem like a good time to offer encouragement and acknowledge success.  I think often times we THINK good things about others but never actually SAY them. And there is a difference in loosely complimenting everything or giving real heart-felt occasional compliments. I believe that is what made my friend’s comments so special to me.  She took the time and gave an unexpected compliment.

Sometimes we fish for compliments – am I doing a good job, do I look OK in this, and so on. It’s nice to get the confirmation. But having someone randomly and unexpectedly tell you that you are doing a good job or really look great feels even better!

My challenge to you and also to myself  – give the unexpected compliment!  You have the power to make some one smile and possibly make their day … what are you waiting for??
