Charleston Smoothie Goodness

One of the best parts of travel and vacationing somewhere new is the unexpected delights you find! While on vacation last week in Charleston, SC, my boyfriend and I were looking for a place to get a smoothie. We found lots of deli’s but the smoothie craze did not seem to have hit Charleston just yet. We were about to settle for a Starbuck’s option when the girl working the counter – a college student – told us about her favorite place Dellaz All Natural. With her glowing recommendation and a desire to try something local – we set out to find it!

Left to our own, I am sure we never would have discovered Dellaz or if we had – we would not have gone in. It was tiny and rather hole in the wall decor style. The entire inside was no larger than my kitchen (not big). But we were greeted by a friendly young gal who was eager to explain their options. Everything was organic she explained and made fresh daily on demand. They took great pride in only using ‘real’ ingredients and offering a quality, healthy product.

I ordered the Wonder Woman Smoothie and it was delicious! The best smoothie I’ve ever had. So – I am going to share the recipe with you! I’ve already tried this at home and did an OK job of recreating it so I know you can too!

What you’ll need – a blender or Vitamix

Ingredients:

  • Almond Milk 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup – I used vanilla flavored
  • 1/2 banana – you could throw the whole thing in if you want
  • 4 Strawberries – fresh or frozen
  • scoop of almond butter
  • 1/4 to 1/2 scoop of protein powder – I used vanilla flavor Whey Cool
  • Handful of Spinach (optional)
  • A little bit of ice

I blended the first four ingredients first – the protein powder doesn’t get all stuck to the sides of the blender this way. The spinach I was skeptical about but our gal talked us in to it and said “you won’t taste it – it will just change the color of the smoothie”. She was right! (Moms with picky kids or picky adults- what a great way to get some greens without even noticing!) One quick caution – the smoothie as I made it above is about 300 calories – so it makes a good meal replacement or hearty snack.

You can play with the ingredients if you want – my boyfriend ordered the Diesel which was similar but used chocolate almond milk, a full banana and no berries.

Enjoy!
